The Arts & Innovation District aims to revitalize a beloved area of Myrtle Beach by creating a vibrant, thriving urban center that attracts both residents and visitors, fostering economic growth and community engagement. Unifying various graphic elements into a coherent visual communication system that reflects the district’s unique history, culture, and aspirations, positioning it as a hub of creativity and individuality. The brand visually represents the district’s values and goals, honoring its past while looking forward to its future.

Guided by brand pillars of Innovation, Locational Magnetism, Culture of Substance, and Undefined Limits — the project ensures that all creative decisions align with the district’s identity and goals to be a dynamic space that supports new ideas and fosters a distinctive culture.

As one of the last remaining historic areas in the City, the Arts + Innovation District has a unique opportunity to capture the mid-century time period of it’s prime in a conceptualized and fresh way. The brand will also serve as a guide for orienting the audience’s sense of place, utilizing a map or grid that mimics the topography of the district. And finally, all of this is brought together in service to the people of the district and the City as a whole. Recognizing that it is the individuals in the community that make this a culture that celebrates individuality, hard work, quality and above all, relationships.

Logo Progression

REFLECTION 

Working on this project at an architecture and planning firm, our team collaborated closely with urban designers who aimed to shape how people perceive and interact with their environment, emphasizing sustainability and inclusivity. Our role was to visually communicate the masterplan’s design to the public. Before even beginning the design process, we engaged the clients in deep discussions to understand their core mission, ultimately distilling their goals into themes of people, places, and time.

The mission statement we crafted aimed to honor the history of Myrtle Beach's Arts + Innovation District while revitalizing it for future growth, serving the community by celebrating individuality, hard work, and relationships. We spent much of the project researching and meeting with clients and the community, ensuring our designs were grounded in truths that resonated with those who would be most impacted. While the district is still under construction and the longevity of the logo remains uncertain, the process was fulfilling, especially knowing that the community is excited and engaged with the outcome.
